Voice modem on W2K3

JoseJose

- Windows 2003 Server

- Hayes V.92 External Modem

- ServersCheck 7.1.5

- Microsoft TTS installed

TTS settings and sound device settings look OK. ServersCheck can see the modem (shows up on pulldown) and is saved properly in voice.conf file... The call is made, but there is no voice once the call is answered.

    - is modem listed under sound drivers and as what?

    - modem not in use by another app?

    - have you tried following:

"Go to the control panel and Sound applet. On the voice tab I had to set the default playback device to Modem #4 Line Playback"

As per help file, this type of alerting is not recommended for the very simple reason that voice call alerts get lost. If someone does not pickup (or picked up by an answering machine), then the alert is missed.

SMS or cell phone text messages is recommended and over a GSM modem rather than the Internet (in order to be able to receive alerts if the network is down)
  • Modem is listed under sound drivers as "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device".

On the Sound applet, on the voice tab, the default playback device is set to "Modem #1 Line Playback".

No other app uses the modem (ServersCheck runs by itself in this server).

I understand this type of alert is not very reliable - we're just looking for an extra level of alerting so that we can have a call along with emails for critical alerts.

Download the phonetext.zip file from following location:

    http://files.serverscheck.net/debug/phonetext.zip

Copy it in the alerts subfolder and open it with notepad.

Modify the second line to reflect your number

Modify the fourth line to reflect your COM port

Go to command prompt and run following command in the alerts subfolder

    alert_voicephone phonetext

Reply with the output sent to console (if possible) and the phonetext.log file (if created)
  • Done. The same thing happens. Phone rings, I pick up, say "HELLO", call hangs up.

No output is sent to the console.

The phonetext.log file contains only one line:

    ERROR : Line is busy.

It is unable to detect a line being picked up. It could be related to the modem or the quality of the phone line.

Unfortunately there is not much we can do about that.

An idea: can you try and install the serverscheck software with the voice modem on a Windows XP platform and then repeat above.
