SMTP Mail Settings

I am trying to use 3.2.x (Standard) to send an email to an external email account when there is an error and my mail server tells me that it can not relay messages to an external account. Is there a work-around for items like this?

You have to look at a different provider that supports SMTP relay to external accounts. Unfortunately this is a non ServersCheck related issue but more of how your mail server is configured.
A work-around is to use ICQ based alerting.
