Port checking

tdanseytdansey
A quick question; if I am checking port 443 with SC and the IP that I am checking the port on is the DSL router of a remote site, am I actually checking whether the port is open on the router or am I checking that there is something running on the end of port 443, i.e. a server running SSL?

I ask the question as I thought that it was checking the router port but the other day when an SBS2003 server went down the port started to fail even though the router was live. Was this a co-incidence?

Thanks.

You are checking port 443 on a remote router and I assume it uses IP forwarding. In that case you are not checking the router but the end device that needs to respond on port 443.

Thanks - yes, as far as I understand it, we have port redirection set up on the router so it works using the IP forwarding.

That is a "neat" way of checking whether a server is up or not without getting inside the firewall, just by finding an open port.
